Harmonic Analysis

Electrical networks may include numerous sources of harmonic current generation including AC and DC variable speed drives, electric arc furnaces, switched mode power supplies in computer systems and even lighting ballasts. These harmonic currents may result in distortion of the supply voltage and current waveforms and can adversely affect other equipment connected to the network by causing overloads or EMC interference. If power factor correction capacitors are installed on the system parallel resonance can occur amplifying harmonics currents and the adverse effects on the network.

PCE undertake harmonic studies to determine the levels of harmonics on a system and the effects of parallel resonance. The system can then be designed with capacitors configured as harmonic filters to avoid resonance and/or absorb harmonic currents to limit adverse effects. Studies are undertaken using SKM PowerTools software and the results presented in a detailed engineering report together with recommendations and filter designs to mitigate the problem.
